Thank you Marloes for including me in your newsletter. Part 4 of my series on souvenirs will be posted tomorrow morning. This one is about a very special ball of twine -- okay. that sounds weird. But hear me out ;-)
Sara, our suitcases are so packed that we don’t do souvenirs… or rather, we haven’t. We don’t do KFC either, but your piece has me yearning for some physical proof that we were there — in the small markets, amongst the people.
Maybe I should start shipping things back to our home base… or pick something tiny that doesn’t weigh much?
Thank you! And maybe you could reconsider getting souvenirs; some are so great because of the stories. On our longer trips we shipped some thing to the Netherlands.
This is a lovely wander through special souvenirs indeed! I do have a few for a similar variety of reasons and they really fill my heart with joy when I see or use them!
These days, after years of living in other countries, and travels to many places, we try to cut down on buying souvenirs, especially on bric-a-brac that will just gather dust on someone's shelf. Instead, I collect "memory souvenirs" (photographs) that help transport my mind back to that time/space juncture that I want to remember.

Such great ideas. I love this piece.

(By the way, who is Sara?)
Um, uh… My apologies, Marloes! Funny thing is, I don’t even know a Sara — no clue where my brain pulled that name.
Maybe we should both keep an eye out… could be a sign Sara’s about to wander into our lives somehow? 🤷♀️
😂😂😂😂😂 I will keep my eyes open

And we buy items that we can actually use, for instance: T-shirts, as described here: https://ronsmit.substack.com/p/travels-and-t-shirts-cb875443c60e
The best souvenirs for me are usually the ones I didn’t buy. Great read!
Thanks!
