Where You've Landed
A short tour of what I'm doing on Substack; for new followers and subscribers, and a refresher for the loyal ones.
Three weeks ago, I published quite a long story about Weird Dutch Food Habits. Little did I know it would become my most popular post so far, in both traffic and engagement. Which posts land and which don't will always surprise me. This one landed, and the conversations it started were the best part! And still, it covers just some food habits. But as I mentioned in the post, we can sometimes use some silly, simple stuff nowadays.
So, for my new audience, but also for those who were already here: a little introduction to my whereabouts on Substack.
Add This to Your Itinerary
This is where I write about travelling and try to inspire readers to create their own itineraries, based on my own experiences. I don’t write about a single form of travel, but I do have preferences: train travel, food markets, and sometimes alternative destinations.
Because travelling is also something we should do with consciousness, I sometimes publish articles that go beyond it all, like about overtourism, or travelling in times of geopolitical chaos.
I also like to add tips for films, music, art exhibitions, and reads to my posts.

Direct Dutch
I introduced the Direct Dutch section more than a year ago. The post about overtourism — and Amsterdam being both a victim of it and playing a part in it — made me think about how the Dutch and the Netherlands 🌷 are perceived by tourists. I just want to be very frank about my country. And direct, of course. That’s what the Dutch do.

For my Dutch readers
At the end of last year, I started a Substack in my own language: Ik ben geen niche1. Because I had to. I started by recycling some old travel stories (about Iran, the DPRK and the Trans-Mongolian Express), but I’ve also published some new ones:

In drieënhalve dag van Amsterdam naar Parijs op de fiets. Om het fenomeen bikepacken uit te proberen en mezelf aan mezelf te bewijzen.

So what’s next?
As I struggle to meet my own set deadlines, and indulge in a lot of other bad behaviour, I'm thinking of bringing stories about the underestimation of Spain, one-way travel, the use of AI in travel content (booo!), nostalgia travel and my home region of Twente. If you have burning questions about 🇳🇱 or other requests, please let me know!
Some housekeeping (finally)
